New ideas for the digital future of Ossiacher Schifffahrt

Customer: Region Villach Tourismus GmbH, Nageler Schifffahrt & Restaurant GmbH & Co KG

CiMo Partner: Salzburg Research Forschungsgesellschaft mbH

Challenge

A small Austrian company has been successfully operating tourism ships and services on Lake Ossiach since 1957 with modern ships such as the MS Ossiach and the MS Gerlitze. Nevertheless, the company must continuously improve its port infrastructure and digital cruise services to meet changing needs and new trends towards sustainability, energy efficiency, digital service innovation and changing leisure behavior.

The company is faced with the challenge of deciding on future investments in sustainable, digitalized port facilities and digital tourism technologies and identifying the future leisure behavior of tourists and locals.

Methods

These challenges were addressed with the support of two EDIH-CIMO services: training in crowd technology and support in conducting an open ideas crowdsourcing campaign to expand the collaboration and stakeholder network in the regional innovation ecosystem, as well as prioritizing idea collection and preparing a service prototype.

Result, Impact

The successful establishment of the ideas campaign on a digital platform and the use of crowdsourcing technology have already led to an increase in digital capacities. The interactions and discussions are completely digital, making the entire process more efficient, scalable and transparent.

By using crowd technology and involving different stakeholders, the level of innovation is increased and the digital maturity of the company is increased. Collaboration with regional stakeholders from the tourism and culture sectors as well as with digital transformation supporters contributes to the development of innovative solutions and opens up economic opportunities in the sustainable tourism market.

Collaboration with regional partners and planning follow-up prototypes offer the opportunity to exploit the economic benefits of introducing new Internet of Things applications and services in the field of cultural tourism and tourism technology.
